The Barriers to Leadership Growth: Insecurity, Pride, and Contextual Limitations

Voice of Change

When a person is committed to the journey of leadership, dedicated to giving the best version of themselves to humanity, to contributing positively to other people's journeys, growth, discovery, and fulfillment, very few things can stand in their way. Two of these few things are insecurity and pride.

Insecurity stops a leader from choosing people who are stronger than they are in areas essential to fulfilling the vision. This is often because the leader feels intimidated by the strengths, skills, and traits of others, qualities that should be leveraged to bring the vision to life. Insecurity also prevents a leader from accepting feedback, which is the breakfast of champions.

Pride operates much like insecurity. It prevents a leader from accepting criticism, and a prideful person cannot be corrected. A prideful person cannot take feedback. Pride is thinking more highly of yourself than you truly are. It is believing you are better than others or more deserving of privileges than the next person.
