Pride and the Leader: Understanding the Spectrum of Pride in Leadership

Voice of Change

In this episode of the Voice of Change podcast, Arc. Olajumoke Adenowo explores the subject of pride in leadership, examining it as a spectrum.

On one end of the spectrum, the far end, is arrogance: a pride that comes without real accomplishments or from an overinflated idea of one’s achievements. Pride often has its roots in insecurity and feelings of inferiority, causing people to overcompensate for the deep sense within their subconscious that they are not good enough, and they know it.

On the other end of the spectrum is pride that stems from a sense of dignity, such as the conviction, “This is beneath my dignity; I will not allow this to be done to me.” It can also arise from a feeling of satisfaction in one’s accomplishments. This is the kind of pride that drives you to always do your best work, to review and refine it for excellence. You don’t want to be associated with anything less than excellent.
